In 1983, I was unexpectedly asked to speak at a Volunteer Action Center Luncheon in Scranton, Pennsylvania, when one of the keynote speakers couldn’t attend. With no prepared speech, I found myself scribbling notes on a napkin, using the letters of the word “VOLUNTEER” to inspire my impromptu address. This moment led me to deeply reflect on the true meaning of volunteerism, and today, I share those reflections with you in my article,

 

What a Volunteer Means to Me

 

V – Very Volunteers are very committed individuals. They dedicate their time and energy to causes they believe in without expecting anything in return. Their commitment often inspires others to get involved and make a difference.

O – Organized Being organized is a crucial trait for volunteers. They often juggle multiple tasks and responsibilities, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. Their organizational skills help in planning and executing projects efficiently.

L – Loving Volunteers have a loving and caring nature. Their compassion drives them to help others and improve their communities. This love for humanity is what makes their efforts so impactful.

U – United Volunteers work together, united by a common goal. They come from diverse backgrounds but join forces to achieve something greater than themselves. This unity is a powerful force for change.

N – Needed Volunteers are always needed. Their contributions fill gaps in services and support that might otherwise go unmet. They provide essential help to organizations and individuals alike.

T – Tremendous The impact of volunteers is tremendous. Their efforts can lead to significant positive changes in communities, from providing aid in times of crisis to supporting ongoing initiatives for social betterment.

E – Effective Volunteers are effective in their roles because of their dedication and passion. They bring unique skills and perspectives that enhance the effectiveness of the projects they work on.

E – Efficient Efficiency is a hallmark of good volunteers. They maximize resources, including time and materials, to achieve the best outcomes. Their efficiency ensures that every effort counts and has a meaningful impact.

R – Ready Volunteers are always ready to help. They step up in times of need, often on short notice, and provide immediate assistance. Their readiness makes them invaluable in emergency situations and ongoing projects.
